Cake & Ice Cream with a Serial Killer

Serial killer/sexual predator Joseph Edward Duncan, III turned 44 today.

That's already 4 more birthdays than Brenda (Groene) McKenzie will ever have. It's 7 more than Mark McKenzie will ever see.

It is 31 more birthdays than young Slade Groene will ever celebrate with his family; 39 more birthdays than little Dylan Groene will ever be so excited about that he simply cannot sleep the night before...

It is 31 more birthdays than Sammiejo White will experience; 39 more than her half-sister Carmen Cubias will enjoy. It is 34 more years of life- and freedom- than little Anthony Martinez will ever realize.

That is, assuming these victims would have lived TO the age of 44- it is more than likely each of them would have lived to age 75+.

All the promise of these lives, all the future. All these wonderful human beings (and possibly more) are now dead- all because of JED. This tally doesn't even consider the multiple young lives JED has tainted by molestation, rape, assault... They are still alive, and still dealing with his evil remembrance. He has also stolen years from those victims.

Last year- February, 2006- JED's brother, Bruce "Spyder" Duncan, recounted to me a conversation he had with his mother about visiting JED in the KC jail. He hadn't spoken to her in so long, and he told me that he knew the only reason she called him was because "she needed something." In that phone call, she claimed she didn't want to drive "out there" to Kootenai County jail by herself, in her own vehicle, so she asked Bruce to drive her:

"We can all visit together and celebrate- for ALL our birthdays!"
(Bruce's and Lillian's birthdays are close to JED's). Bruce told his mother that no, he didn't want to go, but she could go ahead and travel there by herself- he wasn't interested, thanks. She came back with "But gas prices are SO high!"

Bruce shot back, "Yeah, and they'll be higher with my pickup truck! If you want to go, use your own car, but ask someone else to drive you because I'm not going."

Bruce told me that his mother still persisted in trying to get him to drive her out to the KC Jail to visit JED close to his birthday, even suggesting they rent a car- with Bruce footing the bill.

When he had finally had enough of her cajoling, he yelled out what was most keen in his mind- what he told me, in hindsight, he should have just said up front to his mother- but somehow could not:

"I am NOT going to have cake and ice cream with a fucking serial killer!!!" (click)

(or CRASH!?) Bruce then slammed his cordless phone receiver against the handset so hard that he cracked the base. He told me that his anger toward his mother had been building prior to that phone conversation, and that in the midst of it, "She must have forgotten what she said to me about never wanting me to be born. But I didn't forget it."

That was one of the last times he spoke with her before his untimely death of a heart aneurysm on July 31, 2006- to which Bruce's young daughter was a witness. Another death I feel JED caused. And so, Joseph Edward Duncan, III has also had 3 more birthdays than his own little brother will ever share with his much-beloved children. The little brother who JED tortured for so long. The same little brother who grew into a sensitive, caring, cautious (and paranoid!) father only because of who, and what, his older brother was.

All those victims, all those years. Think about the expectations of your children, their bright faces and imaginations when their birthdays are close at hand. That simple, pure HOPE they have. The energy and excitement is palpable, no? All those lives- all those children- all those birthdays... No.

Carnival of the True Crime Blogs #64

The Cellar is proud to present this week's Carnival of the True Crime Blogs, a showcase of recent entries from some of the best True Crime blogs. Always fascinating, always original, the True Crime Blogroll currently consists of over three dozen blogs and websites with top-notch quality True Crime information and stories. The True Crime Blogroll details and links may be found in the sidebar of this blog.

Starting off this week's Carnival is the mind-boggling story behind the graphic seen above. Gregg Olsen, accomplished True Crime writer/investigator has a new blog entry at CrimeRant, a blog which he shares with fellow True Crime writer M. William Phelps.

In his latest blog entry, Eli Stutzman: DNA and Prints to Solve Colorado Murders?, Gregg reveals more information concerning suspected crimes of recently-deceased Eli Stutzman, former Ohio Amishman and subject of his acclaimed book, Abandoned Prayers.

Olsen thinks Stutzman may have gotten away with murdering two men in Durango, Colorado, in addition to the murder he served time for in Texas, and the suspected murders of his pregnant Amish wife, Ida, and years later- the murder of their 9-year old son Daniel, also known as "Little Boy Blue" for the color of the sleeper pajamas he was wearing when found.

Gregg Olsen is doing his best to see to it that law enforcement will utilize Stutzman's fingerprints and DNA to help solve the "cold case" murders of those men in Colorado. Gregg has posted several blog entries concerning Stutzman- also linked from his recent entry- and is always on top of this case. I recommend buying his book, as Gregg Olsen is the authoritative voice on Eli Stutzman and "Little Boy Blue."

Update 2/25: Gregg Olsen has updated his Eli Stutzman entries at CrimeRant with more information on his perseverance in solving the murders of two Colorado men linked to Eli Stutzman.

J.D. Chandler

One can learn more about J.D. from his recent blogger interview, courtesy of the True Crime Blogroll: Blogger Interview with J.D. Chandler.
...in true blogger tradition for each to choose their ’style’ he has chosen to respond in the narrative. J.D. is a storyteller and a published author and I promise you, it is a narrative well worth reading.
It truly is well worth reading. Thanks to Home Sweet Home for the interview! More blogger interviews will be coming very soon.

Home Sweet Home, whose blog focuses mainly on Domestic Violence crimes and issues, recently wrote The Police Response about a pregnant Randi Regensberg being murdered by Cory Kotrba, who then killed himself. This is a story not to be missed, as the issue of 911 NON-response occurs in cities and towns across this country, every single day.

---

Lilo recently wrote a story about Obed Cortes, a child rapist who decided to quibble with the plea deal he had been given. He thought things were looking quite rosy for him, until... Well, Lilo has the "feel good" story in her post, I would love nothing more than to see him sit in prison for the rest of his life.

Harding from T. O. Crime presents Who Will Speak for Paula and Julie? Two women in Canada murdered, separately. Two families grieving and in need of answers.

---

Criminal Conduct tells the story of a young boy who disappeared just over three years ago from a boys' home in Wyoming in Little Boy Lost: What Happened to Justin Harris? Sad and strange, the reader will wonder why this boy's family does not seem to be doing anything to find him.

Finally, Neill from TrueCrimeBlogUK brings us a story of a sadistic, sex thrill serial killer in Allan Grimson: Nightmare in the Navy. Neill is a new member of the True Crime Blogroll and has a lot of great writing on his blog of crimes from the UK.

May the Schwarz be with you.

Sometimes what a person writes on the internet will come back around to bite them on the buttocks. Long-time readers of this blog will understand this; we've seen it all before with the various internet posts from Joseph Edward Duncan, using various personas/usernames.

Yesterday, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Idaho and federal authorities to extradite Joseph Edward Duncan, III to Riverside County, CA so he may be tried for the 1997 kidnapping and murder of Anthony Martinez.

Federal prosecutors maintain they will complete their prosecution of Joseph Duncan first, despite Gov. Schwarzeneggers's demand, as they believe they have custody.

Here's where it gets a little humorous: Joseph Edward Duncan listed Arnold Schwarzenegger as "My Favorite Hero" on a personal website dating back to March, 2002. That endearment appears when the mouse moves over Arnold's image in the photo collage. The link from JED's personal website sidebar led to this Arnold fan site, (archived).

Additionally, Joseph Duncan was fond of creating faux Time Magazine covers of himself. This is one of the handful he created, which can still be viewed by using the Internet Archive:

If JED had any say in this whole extradition matter, I imagine he would certainly bow to his "favorite hero's" request/demand. One would think Ahhnold already knew this.

Updated 6/9/07 to include video of press conference.
