The Anthony Martinez Case

The Cellar Dwellers have given yet another nudge to this case. Brooke Beare, a morning anchor from CBS2 out of Thousand Palms, CA has now written a story about the possibility of Duncan having murdered this boy, and the information coming from this blog and forum: "Bloggers" Ponder Link Between Desert Cold Case and Idaho Slayings Arrest.

For instance, Steve Huff wrote about this possible link in his blog on July 16 and July 19 after Cellar Dwellers started sending him some links. Yet even before that exposure, the Cellar Dwellers were hard at work making the connections, mapping the distances, placing Duncan's relatives in the area- putting the pieces together. At first glance, any links between Anthony's murder and Duncan seemed to be gossamer speculation. Until the "sleuthing" picked up some serious steam.

In the later blog entry, Steve writes,"In the entry titled The Other Missing... How Many, Jet? I mentioned the unsolved abduction and murder of Anthony Michael Martinez from Beaumont, California, on April 4, 1997. At the time I wasn't sure as to Joseph Duncan's location. Turns out court documents available from the time show that Duncan was somewhere in California, after all. He was also driving a vehicle that roughly matched the appearance of the vehicle in the Martinez murder."

He explains in detail how several points about the Martinez case that had him doubting any link became more of a possibility the more he learned about Duncan.

As Duncan's prison, parole, court and school documents became available, sleuthers devoured them, poring over every detail six ways from Sunday. Contained in those documents were seemingly insignificant details: bits of quotes, the name of a town, maybe just a 3-digit number. But those details are gold, because when added to the clues from other documents, they became a lucent picture of Duncan's life: his whereabouts, the dates, his contacts. Until there are other details to add, details which exclude Duncan, that picture could fit this crime.

JoJoFox, Scubagirl, Bloo and others in the Cellar forum discovered, tracked down, verified, sifted, sorted and collated the myriad details and suppositions into a cogent file to send to the FBI and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Ms. Beare was contacted by the Cellar Dwellers as well, and apparently thought enough of the work of "amateur sleuths" and "bloggers" that she wrote this story.

She writes, "Could there be a link between one of Beaumont's most grisly murders and a serial sex offended just arrested in Idaho? An online "blog" community thinks so, and they've been tipping off Riverside County law enforcement.

For the past several weeks, bloggers like JoJoFox have posted thoughts, research, and data about the death of 10-year old Anthony Martinez of Beaumont in 1997."

Now that's something you don't often read in the news. Ms. Beare stated the facts, and hey! she did it without condescension for bloggers or by pooh-poohing their efforts, either. She must know the stakes are larger than that. I hope this article by Ms. Beare gets some fires burning at the FBI and Riverside County Sheriff's Department. My forum has been burning with it for a couple weeks now, as has Steve's blog and other online "sleuthing" communities.

I'm really proud of JoJo, Scubagirl, Bloo and the other Cellar Dwellers for caring enough (and being dog-with-a-bone determined enough) to pick at these details and then arrange them, and send the info along to the authorities. I know firsthand how little sleep they've had lately.

If events and facts can clear Duncan from being a suspect in the murder of Anthony, then that's the way it goes. Yet many more people now know of Anthony's unsolved murder, and that can only help solve this case. Shine a little more light upon it. Get people talking about it again. Maybe someone who knows something will decide they've been quiet far too long, that this family needs to know who killed their boy.

Diana Medina, Anthony's mother, said, "You always want to know that your child is not forgotten. That people do hold him near to their hear, and they still are concerned. And concerned about finding him. I appreciate their passion."

"I appreciate their passion, because a lot of times, when a case is solved, it's the passion of one person. "

Or the passion of a community of bloggers.

Update 7/29 related: Blogger heightens interest- The Latoyia Figueroa case

"Thanks largely to the efforts of a local Internet blogger, the Figueroa case is receiving plenty of national coverage, particularly from cable news. "These missing-persons stories happen every day," said the blogger, Richard Blair, who operates a progressive political Web site at

"But which become newsworthy? A lot of it has to do with skin color and economics, but more important, I think, is what catches somebody's eye. If you get the word out, news organizations will respond. That's what we did."

"What has happened also highlights the role of bloggers vis-a-vis the mainstream media.

"Blogs can act as a stimulus to traditional journalism," said Richard Craig, who teaches journalism at San Jose State University. "That's what happened in this case. It's a good thing."

Thanks to JoJoFox for sending me this article.

Update II: Oz character

Thanks to a shrewd Cellar reader, we are closer to putting this one to bed. Jason says,"Hopefully, I can end all this speculation. This is an actor by the name of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He played Simon Adebisi on the HBO series Oz. In fact, Duncan made mention of the series in his blog, saying something to the effect of Oz not being as realistic as another prison movie."

Well now. Jason- thank you! A look through Adewale's various still images from his work convinces me, yet I've also asked the actor just for confirmation.

If anyone finds the original image (a still from a scene? promo image?) please let me know.

Update: Is This Someone's Child?

I received word back from Mr. Ken Foree, the actor who some of the Cellar Dwellers thought might be the face in this image shown in Duncan's "Reality" video.

His reply, short & sweet:
"No that is not me."

How Many?

"Mr. Owl, how many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?"

"Let's find out. One, two, three..."

Meet Jazzi Jet, Happy Joe/Jet, and "The Bogeyman." Three personas which Joseph Edward Duncan, III claimed to possess in his "Jazzi-Jet- Prison Queen" website and his Fifthnail blog entries .

Part I: Jazzi-Jet

The above-mentioned April, 2001 website of Duncan's was removed- even from and Google's cache, except for some text- approximately 15 hours after I found it and notified authorities, and approximately 7 hours after I posted the link on a message board and spoke with a reporter. The main URL was:
with a few sub-pages full of photos.

The accompanying blurbs Jazzi-Jet wrote for each of the 24 images were full of pride and sentimental emotion for his role as the "Prison Queen" while incarcerated. Above all, the site was dedicated to "those memories" with Big Al (Allen Parks), who "shared" Duncan with his friends. The first page upon entering the gallery had a header that read:

Most people who read this will think I'm either fantasizing, just wishing, or plain making this up. But, that's okay...I know it's true! I was arrested at the tender age of 16 for seriously assaulting another boy my own age. I was sentenced as an adult and sent to Walla Walla State Penitentiary (WSP). It wasn't long after I arrived that I was living with a big black man named "Big-Al" who took good care of me and shared me with all his friends. The images you see here are dedicated to those memories.

The blurbs for each photo became progressively boastful. One entry alongside a photo of his bent-over bare ass with pink panties pulled down, (with text overlay reading "What my cellmates really wanted to see!" in a hot pink script font) read:

The caption on this picture says it all. I can't tell you how many men have seen this view in person. I've tried to count how many different men have been inside me and I always loose count somewhere around 40 or 50. I'm surprised that I never caught any diseases!

Yup, the caption says it all, all right. Little wonder he sought out glory holes, gay "bath house sex," as soon as he was paroled.

As recent as May, 2001, Duncan was fantasizing about these past trysts:
Dressing like this really turned on my cellmates of course. Sometimes I would dance in my cell dressed like this and guys would come stand outside the cell to watch the show (and occasionally get their dicks serviced or even a little tail through the bars if "Big-Al" said they could). Once I got screwed by 7 guys in a row one after another...I often reflect on that day!
(emphasis added)

Was he re-creating these events in Fargo? It wouldn't surprise me. I'm thinking his "outdoor activities" involved a heavy amount of public park quickies- you know, the type of anonymous gay sex that is occurring in public places all over this country and slowly coming to the general public's awareness via news stories of the "busts" in the very parks we take our children to play.

So that is just a little background on Jazzi-Jet, the Prison Queen. I have all the Prison Queen web pages saved, images and text. I may publish more of them in the future.

Part II: Happy Joe, or Jet

Happy Joe was a guy who put on a good show. He also liked being called "Jet," which he claimed stood for Joseph Edward the Third.

Jet wanted to be liked by everyone. He wrote about his feelings of persecution almost daily in his blog. He lied to his family, employers and coworkers, he lied to his acquaintances, fellow students at NDSU, friends, and neighbors. He also lied in his blog- was h
e lying to convince himself, because he sometimes wrote that he thought (or assumed) nobody else was reading his blog, or was he creating a backstory for his intended crimes? I especially love this comment he wrote on 2/2/05, titled "On Sex Offender Hysteria":

All my psych reports say I am a low risk; I was just a kid acting out confusion over my own abuse and study's show conclusively that my type of offense is rarely repeated.

Duncan laments about "anyone in the world" being able to type his name in a web browser and find out what a freaking monster he is:

But it hurts my mother, my family, my friends, and even my neighbors who think I’m a great guy, until they find out, then they are afraid of me.

Carrying that torch:

The majority of sex offender convictions are first time convictions, most sex offenders do not re-offend after being caught. That is a stone cold fact that no one can deny in the face of the evidence, and yet people refuse to look at the direct implications; the truth!

Zoinks! The sex offenders and laymen who quote and misinterpret statistics about sex offenders have one thing in common (ah, if not more), and that is they rely on a *known* quantity. Known being those RARE times these criminals have been caught. Nothing more.

Scores of sex offenders and child molesters, in candid interviews as well as polygraph examinations with law enforcement and FBI studies, have openly confessed to having perpetrated FAR more crimes than they have on their criminal records. Those records in black and white, which are the sources for all the oft-quoted studies. Recidivism rates for these gutless pukes are seriously underreported.

Try a sample study on offenders with fewer than TWO known victims, who, in reality, had an average of 110 victims and 318 offenses! (Ahlmeyer, Heil, McKee, and English, 2000)

Happy Joe- Jet- a regular guy, indeed. But still dipping his wick into the seamy side of life (1/30/05):

I have a new fan, Jerry, who thinks I should make a documentary about my experiences. I think he is right, I should, but not until I am ready I think. Jerry sounds like a really neat guy, he has a great blog (see "Sasha" entry below) that I think I understand. Keep your eyes on the air waves, Jerry, I could be famous sooner than you think, but hopefully not too soon.

Happy Joe's new friend Sasha claims to be a teen Russian refugee who fled to the U.S. and is living with a "sugar daddy." More links from his website- - lead to troubling "boy-sex" websites.

Happy Joe Loved to play the wicker man:
Home Invasion

My home was invaded by several police officers just this last Friday while I was at work. I caught them just after they broke in through a window on my we cam which sends an alert to my cell phone when it detects motion. My phone alerted me to the break in while I was waiting for Investigator Chad Jutz fill out the paperwork after searching my car and taking a disposable water proof camera.

The said they were looking for pictures of two boys who were molested more than a month ago by a man driving a red car and who had a "bump" on his lip. The man took pictures of the boys and so they took all my cameras and my home computer to look for pictures. Of course I am clean, they might find some pictures of me naked, non-sexual mode photos I used once to make a birthday card for a girlfriend once) but that's about it. (emphasis added)

Well gee, Jet, ya think maybe- just maybe?- that's because you stashed all the good stuff away in your employer's basement??? Cry me a freaking river, you sorry sack of shit. There are slugs in my garden more worthy of a second chance to dodge the salt than you are.
Poor, poor, much-maligned Jet.

Part III: "The Bogeyman"

From now on I may refer to "Happy Joe" as "Jet" (me) and the demons as "The Bogeyman." If you are familiar with me or even my fifthnail website then you will understand the names (see

This is convenient, is it not? Duncan- already on the run at this point- figures it'd be a smart thing to post this drivel to his blog. Remember, Duncan is a manipulator. Nothing he has ever accomplished, said or done in his life was without manipulation.

He goes on:
The demons (if that's what they/it are/is--I use the term for mere convenience) have convinced me that I should at least question my religious beliefs, (this makes sense, otherwise I would believe anything) and that is how they got the key to the dungeon, and trapped me inside.

To be more specific, I am scared, alone, and confused, and my reaction is to strike out toward the perceived source of my misery, society. My intent is to harm society as much as I can, then die. As for the "Happy Joe" (Jet), well he was just a dream. The bogeyman was alive and happy long before Happy Joe.
I was in prison for over 18 years, since the age of 17. As an adult all I knew was the oppression of incarceration. All those years I dreamed of getting out...And getting even. Instead, I got out and I got even, but did not get caught. So, I got even again, and again did not get caught. So, I figured, well, I got even twice (actually more, but that's here nor there), even if I'm the only one who knows, so now what?
Well that was when the "Happy Joe" dream started. I met a bunch of really great people, the kind of people I didn't even know existed, but here they were, bunches of them, my neighbors, my landlords, my professors, my coworkers, and they were all good people, who were willing to give me a chance despite my past. They were willing to accept me and be my friend, something that was new for me, having been betrayed by many "friends" and even my own family.

So, I tried to make it work. But the problem was those demons. The ones who "got even" for me. They kept reminding me that if my new "friends" knew about them (and what they, I, had done to even), then so much for their friendship. So, "Happy Joe" was just dreaming, or pretending to be happy. (emphasis added)

The Bogeyman is who Joseph Duncan really was all along, no matter what facet he chose to show to society. Regardless of the pots of creme rouge and lengthening mascara, the wigs and leg waxing- the slinky black dresses he wore out to the clubs- regardless of the respectable suits and close-shaven image he may have projected to his employer and college professors and notably, his neighbor Joni Buzick... This guy was a monster. I wonder how detached a family can be to not realize the depth of depravity one of their members embraces. This guy lied to his family, his friends, his fellow NDSU students, his bosses and co-workers, his neighbors, the police, scuba-diving and internet buddies, acquaintances... Children.

And so I wonder- just How Many identities did Joseph Duncan exhibit to those around him and over the internet? Like getting to the center of a Tootsie Pop:

The world may never know.
